Arizona State University's School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning is excited to announce the launch of a brand new annual event -- The Distinguished Alumnus Lecture. Each year, the school will welcome back an alumnus who has gone on to make great strides and achievements in their professional field.
For our inaugural event, taking place on November 14, the school is pleased to welcome back Royal Norman. A 1984 graduate with a degree focused on meteorology-climatology, Norman has gone on to become one of the most trusted and beloved television meteorologists in the Phoenix-market.
Norman has been a resource for Valley homes since the summer of 1984 when he joined the weekend news team for 3TV. He spent 12 years with the station and helped to launch "Good Morning Arizona." In 1996, he moved to Atlanta, where he was the chief meteorologist at WXIA-TV and enjoyed chasing hurricanes -- an opportunity rarely afforded to his peers located in Arizona. But, Norman didn't stay away from the dry heat too long. He returned to Phoenix, and 3TV, in 2001 to become chief meteorologist for the station.
This year's Distinguished Alumnus Lecture will feature Norman offering a "behind the curtains" look at television meteorology, as well as a few of his favorite stories from his time at Arizona State University and throughout his career, including his on- and off-camera work with the Christmas Angel program, granting holiday wishes to over 50,000 children in Arizona every year.
This year's lecture will also feature the unveiling of the school's "Friends of Geography and Planning" group. Previously known as "Friends of Geography," this group aims to bring together alumni and community members with an interest in the areas of geography and urban planning to participate in a variety of opportunities to foster the shared interest and help promote the school's mission.
The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning invites you to join us for this special event. This event is free and open to the public.
